Summertime is winding down, but it is still important to remember to wear sunscreen while spending time in the sun. Sunscreen is a great way to protect your skin from potential damage. However, it can potentially stain your clothing if you are not careful. Sunscreen can be a tricky stain to get out since it contains chemicals such as avobenzone, which can leave a brownish stain on clothes. In the event that you do get sunscreen on your clothes, don’t fret, the laundry experts at SoapBox Laundry have some tips for quick removal.
Treat Immediately
The first thing to do right after you get sunscreen on your clothing is to scrape off the excess sunscreen with a dull spoon. After the excess sunscreen is removed, treat the stained area with talcum powder or cornstarch and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. The cornstarch or talcum powder will soak up some of the oils from the stain and make it easier to get the stain out completely when you get to the washing machine. If you’re at the beach, use the sand! Sand will take the place of talcum powder or cornstarch and have a similar effect.
Before Washing
Pretreat the affected area with a commercial grade stain remover and let it sit for another 10-15 minutes. Next, scrub the stain and work in the stain remover. Use your fingers or a soft-bristled toothbrush to work in the stain remover. After doing this, let it sit for another 15 minutes.
Washing
When washing the garment, it‘s important to note that it should be isolated from any other garments. Add your normal washing detergent to the load. Use hot water to wash the garment or whatever is recommended on the garment’s label. If you want to naturally wash the garment, squeeze a lemon and pour a good amount of salt over the affected area and let it sit overnight.
After Washing
Inspect the previously affected area and make sure the stain is completely gone before drying. If the has disappeared, repeat the process. Once the stain is removed, you’re in the clear to dry the garment. Drying the garment when the stain isn’t completely gone will set the stain in permanently. That’s why it’s important to make sure that the stain is completely gone before drying.
